Children need to grow

I’ve just been reading a blog and it got me thinking about me and my children.  Let the children go

My daughter is nearly 8 years old and I’ve been criticised twice (to my face, goodness knows how much behind my back) because recently I’ve allowed my daughter to walk to school on her own – it’s a 45 second walk.  In fact, once she’s left, I’m usually out of the door within a minute to take my son to school and so I can see my daughter near the gate or in the playground.

At her age I was taking myself and my younger sister to school and it was a much longer walk.

I want her to get her independence, to be aware of things around her.  We’ve taught both our children not to talk to strangers, we’ve taught them that they should never go down dark places, to always avoid that and go down well lit places – of course my children are not at the stage where we are allowing them out that late or too far, but it’s good to keep them in the know.

We’ve allowed our daughter to go to the shop and that was about a 3 minute walk and I’ll be honest, I was sh!tting myself and so I told my husband to follow her.  He did and our daughter did well.  I got worried because like every other mother, I’ve read the horror stories in the media.  I’m a paranoid mother would you believe it!  But I believe that I shouldn’t keep them locked up inside or wrapped up in cotton wool.

I wont allow my children to wonder too far, they have to be able to hear me and vice versa, my son is too young and he’s not allowed out anywhere past my line of sight.  There are some parents who allow 5 year olds to be out wandering around estates etc and I’m a bit to scared to allow that myself, and perhaps it isn’t a sensible thing to do – I don’t know!  Each to their own.

Another thing is, you’ve got me and my sister who were ‘street wise’ while growing up, we used to go out as soon as we woke up and come in when the street lights came on.  Our parents always knew who we were with and always knew we would be back in time.  We used to wonder around all over the place.
Then you’ve got my other sister and brother, and that’s a different story completely.  I don’t know why but my other sister and brother were never allowed to do anything like this.  We all moved to a different place and I guess you’d call it a ‘snobbish’ area.  My dad had got work and we went from a council estate to a new ‘upper class’ area – not that we were rich or upper class lol, just lucky.  So I guess my mother decided to ‘act’ like the other mothers did, or perhaps this was when times were changing slowly to what they are now.  Mothers there didn’t seem to allow their children out to play unless they were with them, they didn’t have friends showing up at the door asking if ‘Jimmy’ was coming out to play.  Now it was all phone calls and organised play-dates etc.

Me and my sister would go on public transport on our own or together when we were about 13 years old (I think) but my other sister didn’t until she was 17 and my brother is 15 and still hasn’t.  They were both sheltered and I don’t think they have the confidence me and our other sister have.

Waiting for the ‘Bad Mother’ Label to come my way lol.

I don’t ask my daughter to go off and do the weekly shop, I don’t tell her to go out and play where ever she wants, however as she gets older, I will allow her to go and play further out a field, perhaps I should now, but as I’ve said, I’m a nervous mother lol.

Inspiring Photographers

I said the other day how I wanted to get into photography, but I’ve got absolutely no idea where to start.

I know nothing about tones and lighting etc and anything I put on Photoshop to edit doesn’t come out the way I want it.  Sometimes it comes out a bit fuzzy or ‘dotty’ and I think this is because of the mega pixels on my camera (???), but I could be wrong lol – afterall, I have NO idea what I’m talking about.

I do, however, know what I like and I’ve had a look online and I’ve seen a few websites belonging to some photographers.

John Robinson is a landscape photographer but also covers many different areas (see website). He has some lovely work.  I can sit there for ages just looking at his photos and growing green with envy that he can produce just fine work.  His photos captivate you and lets you believe you’re actually there.  Then reality kicks in and you realise you’re in your dining room with a basket full of clothes to be ironed.

Russell Lewis is a wedding photographer, and just looking at his photo’s makes you wish you’d hired him on your big day lol.  They are lovely and so meaningful that I’m sure he’ll make every bride and groom believe they’re reliving their magical day.

Mike McFarlane is also a landscape photographer and also does something called Panoramic photography including 360º Virtual Reality tours.  Again, this photographers work is amazing!  It’s so inspiring that it really makes you want to grab your camera and go outside.  All these photographers want you to do this!

I’ve decided that I want to get into the Landscape photography.  I find the outdoors so beautiful.  Since I’ve been thinking more towards photography, everywhere I go now, I find moments that would be lovely to capture on camera.  I’m going to have to start taking my camera out more 🙂

A donation of a good camera is very welcome lol 😉  Cheaky haha, I’m only joking 😀

Two faced? Bored? Back Stabbing?

I’ve learnt that if someone tells you secrets that they shouldn’t, then you can bet your bottom dollar that they’re doing the same with your personal secrets.

If someone is constantly being all ‘high and mighty’ and back stabbing and criticising everything people do, then they’re probably doing it about you behind your back too.

It’s hard when sometimes you value that persons opinion and it’s hard when you’ve not got many people to confide in but I need to learn to stop going to these types of people.

I have several of these types of people in my life.

I’ve had issues in life and I’ve opened up but I guess the entire county know all of my business by now.

I’ve sat and listened to them talking about others, how they are as parents, as workers, as wives/husbands etc.  Sometimes I’ve agreed with what they’ve said, but other times I just ‘ooh & arr’ in the right places because I disagree with them but there’s not a cats chance in hell of me getting my point across because THEY are right and I am wrong!

I’ve had someone tell me how I should do things as a mother or as a wife and if I even tell them I do that already, my words are just brushed aside and they carry on as normal.

The thing is, these people are far from perfect themselves!  No one is perfect.  People do as they see fit!

Poor little birdie

We were on our way out the other day and my kids are screaming to us ‘There’s a bird, a bird!’.  All me and my husband can say to each other is ‘oh no, not again’.

Basically my children seem to be magnets to animals!  I cannot tell you the amount of stray dogs they find or end up in our garden and/or house!  I just don’t know how they do it!
They’ve found birds, cats (cats don’t really count though, they’re outdoor animals), mice etc.

Anyway, this poor bird was hiding behind a bench in our garden and apparently one of our cats was trying to chase it so I was getting ready to find blood.
No blood thankfully but the poor bird was not too good.  He couldn’t fly, one of the wings wasn’t lifting up properly.

We took him inside the house and chucked the cats out and phoned the RSPCA who told us that although it’s fully grown, it could still be a fledgling and so it would probably be tired.  As it’s wings were both tucked nicely into it’s body then he doubted it was any major damage.

He advised us to put him in a box with some water and food and leave him in the dark to encourage roosting so he could sleep and gain strength.
It’s weird though and I had told him this [RSPCA Man] that the bird did look tired and he was swaying back and forth a bit.  Again we were told that this was just because he was tired.

All night I worried about the bird, wondering if I put him up in a tree away from predators, but then wondering if I did that, could he go and get food if he was infact hurt?

Didn’t matter anyway, my husband went to release it and found him dead 😥
Poor thing!

This bird was the type of bird that most people hate, and even I get bloody annoyed with them, but at the end of the day it was a life.  It was a pigeon.  It was really lovely too actually.

Never when you actually need it

I always have these moments, where something happens and you think to yourself ‘Why didn’t I take it with me’ etc.

I go out all the time and before I leave I see something like my camera and I think to myself ‘I wont need that today’, so I carry on with my day and within the hour of being out I find a need for that camera I left at home!
It was such a lovely Kodak moment too.  My husband and our children were walking in front of me and next to each other holding hands, and I just stood there thinking ‘WHY didn’t I bring it!’
I took the picture on my mobile instead but it didn’t turn out very well at all!’

Other things like my Nectar Card, I think to myself that I wont be going into Sainsburys, but Lo and Behold, I come out doing a weeks worth of shopping.

The Law of Sod is at work 😉

I want to do Photography :)

It’s something I’ve always been interested in and I’ve never really done anything about it.

I still own the very same camera my parents gave me about 4 years ago and I think it’s time to get a new one, but I’ve no idea what one to get to be honest – all recommendations are most welcome!  Good and cheap please 🙂

I’ve just joined a photography forum http://www.thephotoforum.com so hopefully that will help me decide which camera to get and some handy tips 😀

I took this photo when we were on holiday in Spain and I love it, it’s my favourite one although it is probably obvious that a newbie took it lol

Pity I have no idea how to take the date off of it lol.

I was thinking too, I’ve no idea WHAT I can do with my camera!  I’ve just taken it out of my bag and clicked the button to take a picture, nothing more lol.

99 Days Until Christmas! Oh no…

Pay day today (weekly pay), and so we’re going to have to buy some more christmas presents.  It’s a bit depressing lol.

For people who are on monthly pay will have around 3 pay days left – sounding even more depressing.

What are your ideas and thoughts for this year?

Hello Kitty Win is here :)

received my prize of a Hello Kitty Tent, Chair and Sleeping Bag yesterday and it’s a proper tent!  I thought it was only a childs play tent I was entering in for!  It sleeps 3 people in there!

I was going to sell it or give it to someone else when I first saw it as I thought it was a 1 man/child tent and was thinking ‘no way am I having my daughter in that on her own’, but now I think we’ll keep it 😀  Buy another 2-3 man tent and hubby can stay in there with our son and I’ll be in with our daughter.

Don’t have a car at the moment, so it would be ideal to go on the train or coach to somewhere as these tents are so light and are in a small bag!

Better start looking for another one 🙂  Would be easier if I had a car though.

Another Win :)

Just received an email to inform me that I’ve won a Hello Kitty Competition.

My daughter LOVES Hello Kitty so she’s so happy about this.  It includes

  • Hello Kitty Tent
  • Hello Kitty Sleeping Bag
  • Hello Kitty fold away chair

Can take up to 40 days to receive but that’s fine.  Woo hoo 🙂

Best Chocolate ever is…

…the one that is free 🙂

Won a bar of dark chocolate, and it was so lovely.  Forgotten what it was called though lol.  Never heard of it before, but it was PROPER dark chocolate.  Something like 80% (Or was it 70% ?)
